Flood-resistant Apple Varieties?
Jul 8, 2014
A few apple varieties have survived weeks under water on the Somerset Levels Floods of winter 2013/14
Kevin often bangs on about choosing the right tree for the appropriate site but a customer came in to the nursery recently with news that even shocked him. The person in question lives on the Somerset Levels. He had planted a range of maiden apple trees in mid December 2013 on M25 rootstocks to grow into standards. They stood submerged in floodwater for six weeks from New Year 2014. The outcome of this? In spring they grew away slowly and by late June when Kevin spoke to the man they were perfectly okay. Miracle no, genetics yes. The varieties planted were Ashmead’s Kernel, Ben’s Red, Lord Derby and Oaken Pin.
