Hawthorns Flowering in June
“Ne’er cast a clout till May be out”. Because of this old saying most Brits think of Hawthorns flowering during the month of May. However, many of the North American species of Crataegus don’t start flowering until early June. Generally called Cockspur Thorns one of the finest of this group is Crataegus persimilis prunifolia. A small round headed tree growing to about 20 feet tall, it is a mass of white blossom in early June, which is very attractive to bees and other insects.
