Delightful Winter Flowers

Lonicera frangrantissimaAs January turns to February, particularly as the weather has been so mild, there is a wonderful selection of shrubs and trees bringing flower, often sweetly scented, in to the garden. Prunus incisa ‘Praecox’ and Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ have been in flower since before Christmas. Whilst Hamamellis and Lonicera fragrantissima (left) started to look and smell delicious early in the New Year. They are now joined by the beautiful yellow flowers of Cornus mas and the sweetly scented blooms of Mahonia japonica ‘Bealei’ (seen on the Home Page; Mahonia x media 'Lionel Fortescue' shown below). If these plants are sited near paths and doorways they lift the spirits even on these current grey short days.
