Heptacodium Flowering into Late September

Heptacodium miconiodes is a beautifully scented shrub with heads of white flowers that give a display from late summer into the autumn. This large vigorous shrub is related to Honeysuckle.

Another genus that can give a good autumn display is Hydrangea, particularly H. paniculata cultivars. Shown below are H. paniculata 'Dwahma' (top) and  H. paniculata 'Unique' (bottom). We also have the rather choice Hydrangea aspera Villosa group putting on a beautiful display in our arboretum with its mauve and white lacecap flowers - this cultivar needs some shade.
